Rebel Without a Cause is that Jim Stark gets arrested by the police for underage drinking. Jim gets interrogated by a police officer, named Ray, who makes Jim reveal that his house is like a zoo. His home is like a zoo because his dad and mom tell him to act like an all-American boy, but don't act like that themselves, causing them to fight all the time. His family situation hurts Jim and motivates him to drink. While this interrogation is happening, a girl named Judy also gets interrogated to reveal that her dad calls her 'a dirty tramp', 'doesn't love her', and treats her poorly. The police don't care about Judy and send her home. The next day, Jim goes to the planetarium, where he gets in a fight with Judy's love interest, Buzz. Buzz and Jim engage in a car duel; Jim wins, and Buzz dies, prompting the characters to run away from home and question what is wrong with their lives. The story bears a striking resemblance to another 1950s coming-of-age drama, The Outsiders. In both books, the main character is partially responsible for their enemy's death, causing them to run away from home, with, at the very end, having one of their closest friends die. However, Rebel functions more as an independent character study than The Outsiders, which focuses on a family character study.
Parents seem to lack the truth in a world that seems soulless.
